Look at our stellar rating and you will immediately see why we really go above and beyond with our customers in quality, service and satisfaction. The striking ceramic known as Talavera is over 800 years old, originating in the Talavera de la Reina region of Spain. At that time, it was called Majolica. Known for its beautiful glaze work, Talavera was imported to Mexico in the 16th century where it was used to decorate monasteries and churches with tiles and religious figures. Talavera is not turned or tin glazed-the pigments are brushed onto raw or unfired glaze. Each piece takes between 12 and 15 days to complete. It must set for 16 to 18 hours before being liquefied and poured into molds. The pieces are then hand polished and fired for six hours at 1500 (F) degrees, then painted and baked again in an 1800 (F) degree oven. Prehispanic Mexican craftsmen blended the majolica process with their own interpretation of the method to work the clays of the region and incorporated their art forms and colors. Their product came to be known as Talavera. We are happy to pay about 20-25% above 'market' value to our artisans in Mexico in order to create a sustainable business for them as well as in the hopes of bringing up the standard of living of the community at large. Unlike other Mexican import companies we specialize in Mexican Talavera. We stand behind our products with a 100% satisfaction guarantee.

This item is absolutely stunning, and beautiful. Many people when they visit me, look at it, and say how nice it looks. What a great decorative item!
I am really glad I purchased it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice piece but colors are off, June 9, 2011

The Norah talavera sun arrived in perfect condition. Unfortunately, the colors didn't match the picture. The sun in the photo has earthy colors of green, burgundy, muted orange and gold, but the one I received has much brighter colors - bright red, bright cobalt blue, bright orange. At first I thought the fault was with my computer monitor for not showing the colors correctly. And I know that hand-made pottery fires differently in the kiln each time thus yielding variations in color. But upon further inspection I realized that the sun in the photo has eyelids and my sun doesn't, so indeed it's not the exact same piece. It is a lovely work of art but is too bright for my decor, so I am returning it. If you don't mind the bright colors, go for it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brought beautiful sun into our kitchen, October 7, 2010

When we remodeled our kitchen, we decided to use hand-painted Talavera tiles on the countertop and interspersed in the tile floor. Those came out great. When I saw Talavera suns, I knew they would be perfect for wall hangings to help create a theme that tied into the floor and countertop tiles. I ended up getting three different suns from three different sources.

Because these are hand-made, each is unique. The picture gives you a pretty good idea of what the sun will look like, but the exact look will vary somewhat. We're very pleased with this sun and with the other two we purchased.

A friend who works on lead abatement suggested that we have a sample of the countertop tiles tested, since there are no regulations for the pigments used in many glazes for ceramics. Sure enough, the levels were very high. He said that the dark red pigments tend to have the highest levels. Keep this in mind if you have small children who can reach the sun wherever you place it.
